SUMMARY:Health in the Himalayas: Lewes Screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first screening of the film and a glass of bubbly afterwards (first 40 glasses FREE!). \n\n\n\nThis short documentary follows a team of medical professionals from Doctors for Nepal\, as they travel to the remote Karnali district in western Nepal to deliver a women’s health camp. \n\n\n\nIt is the first ever camp of its kind to be run by the charity\, bringing together Nepalese doctors and nurses\, all of whom are Doctors For Nepal scholarship holders\, alongside the charity’s founder Dr Kate Yarrow and her NHS colleague Dr Rasana Bajracharya. Together the team delivers vital healthcare to patients in one of the most remote and inaccessible regions of the Himalayas. \n\n\n\nThe film explores the challenges that women face in their reproductive lives; in particular how these are impacted by living conditions\, lack of education\, and longstanding cultural beliefs. \n\n\n\nDepot\, Pinwell Road\, Lewes \n\n\n\nTickets: £5/£10 Children/Adults. Available here now. 50% of proceeds will go to Doctors for Nepal.

SUMMARY:Silent online auction to raise funds for PPE in Nepal
DESCRIPTION:DOCTORS FOR NEPAL IS HOSTING A SILENT\, ONLINE AUCTION TO RAISE URGENT FUNDS TO PROVIDE PPE TO PROTECT HEALTHCARE WORKERS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN SOME OF THE MOST REMOTE PARTS OF NEPAL. \nCLICK HERE TO START BIDDING\nVery few hospitals or health-workers in Nepal have any form of PPE\, so our goal is to raise as much money as possible to purchase this much needed equipment to help protect our doctors\, nurses\, and students. Funds raised will be used to purchase PPE and ensure its distribution to our teams across Nepal. If we succeed in raising over £5\,000\, the additional funds will go towards the continuing tuition fees of our students. It is extremely challenging for us to raise funds in these extraordinary times\, so we ask you to dig as deep as you can\, to help these forgotten communities. \nThe number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nepal continues to rise with total number of reported cases (as of September 26th) 70\,616 and 459 deaths (although it is extremely likely that these numbers are grossly under representative of the true figures). We have done our bit to help the NHS here in the UK\, so now please help protect the most vulnerable and our very own healthcare workers in Nepal from this deadly virus. \nAUCTION STARTS 1st AUGUST 2020\, 0900 AUCTION ENDS 2nd October 2020 2300\nCLICK HERE to start bidding\nAMAZING PRIZES TO BE WON:\n1 week’s stay in beautiful 300 year old rustic house in Provence\, France \n1 night’s stay on fabulous houseboat – Shoreham-by-Sea\, West Sussex \n1 night’s stay in private camping glade in Wilderness Wood\, East Sussex \n  \n  \n1 hour flight for 1 above the Seven Sisters\, East Sussex

SUMMARY:COAST TO COAST CYCLE RIDE
DESCRIPTION:PHASE WORLDWIDE COAST TO COAST CYCLE EVENT \n8 May 2020 – 11 May 2020 \n\n \nDoctors for Nepal has been given 5 places in PHASE WORLDWIDE’S Coast to Coast cycle event.\n \nThe C2C is one of the most well-known long distance cycle routes in the UK.  First taking in the stunning Lake District\, then across the Eden Valley to the beautiful Northern Pennines\, before dropping down to the post industrial landscape of the North East.\n \n\nAs there are many variations of this route\, PHASE have chosen to begin in Whitehaven and end in Sunderland (215 km/133 miles).  This will be completed over three days of cycling\, which allows for a range of abilities to be able to take part.  The challenge will begin on the morning of Friday 8th May (Bank Holiday)\, you will arrive in Sunderland on the afternoon of the Sunday.  On the Monday morning\, PHASE will transport all participants and their bikes back to the starting point at Whitehaven. \n\n\n\nThe route is comprised of specially constructed cycle paths\, off-road tracks and micro roads\, only occasionally straying onto short sections of busier roads where necessary. \n\n\n\nThe route (PHASE may later suggest slight adjustments based on advice) is available to view here \n\n\n\nPHASE will be organising accommodation for all participants on the Friday (around Penrith)\, Saturday (around Rookhope) and Sunday (Sunderland) nights in guesthouses on a shared room basis. \n\n\n\nThe PHASE support team will be on hand the whole way\, and will transport your luggage to the accommodation each night. \n\n\n\nIt is possible to complete the route on a range of different types of bike\, however as there is a mix of terrain\, a hybrid type bike may be most useful. A fairly wide range of gears will be the most important asset to help you traverse some of the uphill climbs. \n\n\n\nThe event registration fee is £250 and PHASE have set a fundraising target for each rider of £400.  All funds raised by our DFN riders will be used specifically for scholarships for the Auxiliary Nurse Midwives that we sponsor at PHASE Nepal. \n\n\nIf you would like to take up one of DFN’s 5 places\, please contact cesca@doctorsfornepal.org and she will let you know how you can register.\n

SUMMARY:DOCTORS FOR NEPAL CHARITY BIKE RIDE
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY 29th – SUNDAY 30th JUNE 2019 (arriving Friday evening 28th June)\nARE YOU AN EXPERIENCED CYCLIST?  FANCY FUNDRAISING FOR DOCTORS FOR NEPAL?\nWe are looking for further 12 experienced cyclists to take part in our charity bike ride in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park\, with the challenge to climb the equivalent height of Mount Everest from base camp on a bike – circa 3400m – to raise much needed funds to improve healthcare in rural Nepal. \n  \n  \nYou pay: £120  You fundraise: via justgiving.com/campaign/DFNbikeride2019 \nYou get: *DFN cycling shirt *Event pack *2 evening meals *Packed lunches *Checkpoints *Drinks *Snacks *Support vehicle *Basic first aid\n*Big smiles and encouragement \nThis summer we are organising a bike ride in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park. The challenge is to climb the equivalent height of Mount Everest from base camp on a bike – circa 3\,400m – to raise much needed funds to improve healthcare in rural Nepal. \nAll our doctors\, medical and nursing students come from the remotest villages high up in the Himalayas\, so this ride will be the perfect way to raise much-needed funds to improve healthcare in rural Nepal. The route will be two big loops setting out each morning from Hawes. The rides have been chosen for road quality\, scenic beauty\, rideability and simplicity of directions. This is not an easy ride the North Face ride is 95km with an ascent of 1\,710m\, and the South Face ride is 125km with an ascent of 1\,660m. It is challenging in places with steep ramps and the amount of climbing involved means that the cycling will be long\, hard and will require stamina. \nBut just imagine what it’s like for people such as our doctors and students\, living in the remote villages in Nepal. Sometimes they have to walk for 9 days to reach their nearest health-post\, and it’s not guaranteed there will be a doctor there to treat them. They then must walk 9 days to get home again once treated.  \nClick HERE to download our INFORMATION SHEET \nFor more information and to register\, please contact cesca@doctorsfornepal.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:ROYAL PARKS HALF MARATHON
DESCRIPTION:On 14th October 2018 we have 3 people running in the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Doctors for Nepal.  It’s a great event\, so if you’re in London why not head down to the course and cheer our runners on! \nIt starts and finishes in Hyde Park\, passing Buckingham Palace\, St James’s Park\, the Houses of Parliament\, Green Park and Kensington Gardens on its way. A great day out for runners and spectators alike. \nHere’s the reason why one of our team\, Richard\, has decided to run this year’s event and fundraise for Doctors for Nepal –  it’s a great story:\n“So I’m Richard\, and the first thing to note is that running is not my thing. Therefore doing a half marathon is a seriously big effort for me.   \nRunning may not be my thing\, however hiking is. And I am lucky enough to have spent time hiking in Nepal\, through remote communities. In this time I managed to be unlucky enough to develop a blister so large on the pressure point of my foot\, a more accurate description of it was a hole in the foot\, I literally couldn’t walk for 3 days. As a consequence of this\, luck changed again\, and I was lucky enough to experience the supreme care and hospitality of the kind Nepali villagers and doctor in the remote village in which I was stranded. Medical supplies were not plentiful and the facilities were pretty rudimentary but their care got me back on my feet in time.  The place I was stranded also happened to be in the shadow of the largest mountains you can imagine so that was a very reasonable silver lining. \nI fell in love with the country during my time there and could not fail to notice just how remote many villages were\, with basic medical facilities and expertise scattered across great distances and towering peaks and ridges. \nIt is for this reason that I want to raise money for Doctors for Nepal.” \nYou can support Richard and our other two wonderful runners by donating to their JustGiving links below.  All funds raised go directly to Doctors for Nepal: \nRichard: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/richard-savill2\nAlex:  https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/alexander-allen2\nSarah: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sarah-lovell17\n  \n

SUMMARY:FUNDRAISING SCREENING at DEPOT in LEWES
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce that DEPOT\, the fabulous new independent cinema in Lewes\, East Sussex\, has offered to hold a fundraising screening our award-winning documentary NAMASTE\, A HIMALAYAN JOURNEY\, followed by Q&A and DRINKS on WEDNESDAY 25th April 2018\, the 3rd anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal.\nThe Film:\nDr Kate Yarrow goes on a life-changing two-year adventure\, following some of the incredible journeys patients have to endure to reach healthcare in remote areas of Nepal. Kate uncovers the additional challenges facing doctors and patients after the devastating earthquakes in 2015\, and reveals the extraordinary personal journeys of the people she meets along the way. Six months after the earthquake\, Kate returns to Nepal to see the devastation and how this has affected access to healthcare for people living in the most remote areas. Kate follows the treacherous 12-hour journey of a pregnant woman in need of urgent hospital treatment – it’s not uncommon for patients to walk for up to 9 days to reach basic healthcare. The pregnant lady is carried in a plastic chair tied to her husband’s back as he walks over the Himalayas to reach a basic hospital in Manma village. The earthquake has made these journeys even more treacherous – confrontations with landslides on the roads are an everyday occurrence. Kate visits a displacement camp in Kathmandu for those left homeless after the earthquake\, and is moved to tears by what she sees in a village high up in the Himalayas. \nFUNDRAISING screening\, Q&A and drinks with writer/presenter Kate Yarrow\, director/camera Gareth Taylor and Executive Producer/editor Cesca Eaton.   \nTickets: Adult £9  Under 25s £4 (includes complimentary drink): \nCLICK FOR TICKETS/TRAILER \n

SUMMARY:Brighton Marathon 2018
DESCRIPTION:We have TWO fabulous runners running this year’s BRIGHTON MARATHON for Doctors for Nepal\, Lloyd and Arfin.  It will be held on SUNDAY 15th APRIL 2018\, so if you’re anywhere near Brighton please do cheer our runners on.  Lloyd is a professional musician/composer and is very committed to DFN having played so beautifully at our fundraising concert last year – we are eternally grateful for his ongoing support.  If you would like to sponsor Lloyd please visit his JustGiving page here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lloyd-coleman1.  All funds raised by our runners go directly to help improve healthcare in rural Nepal. \n \nHere’s what Lloyd had to say at the end of this year’s Brighton Half Marathon: \n“Congratulations to the Doctors for Nepal runners who completed the Brighton Half Marathon today. It was at the finishing line of this event exactly a year ago Cesca Eaton asked me if I’d consider running the marathon distance in aid of DFN. Many thanks to those who have donated so generously already . . . . I’ve chosen Doctors for Nepal because of the vital work they do in Nepal. You will remember the awful earthquake they had there a few years ago\, which made an already challenging environment for healthcare professionals all the more difficult. Even though you or I may never experience or see the work DFN deliver first hand\, I believe supporting this work in a country far less fortunate than ours is a small but worthy contribution to make. Please support in any way you can!”  Lloyd Coleman \n

SUMMARY:Brighton Half Marathon
DESCRIPTION:We had 9 runners taking part in the Brighton Half Marathon last Sunday – a cold and blustery day.  Fighting against the elements they all completed the course\, with some with amazingly fast times.  The greatest news is that between them\, our runners have raised over £3\,000 and counting.  We are extremely grateful to Abby\, Emily\, Kiersten\, Effie\, Becky\, Sarah\, Harriet\, Valentina and Sasha for their fundraising efforts.

SUMMARY:Brighton Marathon
DESCRIPTION:In the 2017 BRIGHTON MARATHON Charlie Barker ran for DFN.  He was running his first marathon and trained very hard to finish in a time of 4 hours 29 minutes.  WELL DONE CHARLIE!\nHere’s why Charlie is ran for DFN: \n“Running my first marathon for Doctors For Nepal for Doctors for Nepal because I believe all in Nepal should have access to a Doctor. \nWith less than 1 doctor per 100\,000 of the population in much of Nepal\, the need to train rural doctors cannot be emphasised enough. \nDoctors for Nepal improves healthcare in rural Nepal by providing scholarships to underprivileged medical and nursing students\, who return to work in their communities once qualified\, thus providing sustainable healthcare. \nWith a close ex-Gurkha friend and having had the privilege to visit Nepal\, I know firsthand how resilient\, proud and genuine the Nepalese people are. Conditions in rural areas must be very arduous\, trained medical professionals are hard to come by (see statistic above). Often the long\, dangerous journeys to hospital/clinic are detrimental to the patients health. So with your help\, however small\, you can improve the chances of these great people leading happy\, healthy lives wherever they live. \nThank you.”
