Nursing Students

DFN Nursing scholarships.

We now have 11 nursing students.  Apsara and Binita are in their second year of studies for their 3-year nursing degree courses in Kathmandu, and we have just heard that they have received their results from their second year exams which were excellent.  Congratulations Apsara and Binita.  Our other three nursing students are Prabha, in her first year of study in Jumla,  Yuna Shahi who is in her second year of study at Patan Academy Nursing College in Kathmandu and nursing student Neelam Yadav who is also at Patan Academy Nursing College in her first year of study.  In October 2019 we welcomed 3 more nursing students - Sita, Niruta and Haridevi - into the DFN family. All are studying at KAHS (Karnali Academy of Health Science) Nursing College in Jumla.  In December 2019 we welcomed 3 more PHASE student nurses into the DFN family - Rita, Sangita and Satya - all of whom are in their 1st year of study at KAHS. We have collaborated with PHASE (Practical Help Achieving Self Empowerment) – an NGO that aims to empower isolated communities through health, education and livelihood opportunities, and with KAHS (Karnali Academy of Health Sciences). Our PHASE nursing students were auxiliary nurse midwives (lower level of health worker), and we are sponsoring their studies to become nurses.  Our newest students at KAHS were all school students before entering nursing college.  After completing their studies, all 8 nursing students will return to remote areas to practice for a minimum of 2 years.

Scholarships cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • If necessary – also hostel fees, food, and book

It costs approximately £5,000 to train a nurse in Nepal

The scholars are contracted to work in a remote area for a minimum of 2 years in return for their funding. To apply for a scholarship, click here. Click here to read Dr Gerda Pohl’s explanation of how PHASE’s nurses are trained. Gerda is a Trustee and Medical Coordinator for PHASE Worldwide.
