Nahakul saves young boy’s tongue
A 5-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after cutting his tongue while bathing in a stony river. The boy fell out of a tree and bit his tongue which was almost completely severed.
His father took him on the back of his motorbike, on a 7-hour journey to the nearest hospital, along treacherous mountainous roads. People in remote Nepal sometimes have to walk for up to 9 days to reach their nearest hospital, and then it’s not guaranteed that a doctor will be there to help them.

Lalit recovers from Covid-19
Dr Lalit, our first ever DFN funded student, now a doctor undertaking his postgraduate education in obstetrics and gynaecology in Egypt, is recovering from being extremely unwell with Covid-19. He touchingly writes “I pray to God for my life. NEWS FROM OUR DOCTORS FIGHTING COVID-19
Dr Nahakul and Dr Meena are both in remote regions of Nepal and have yet to register any cases of COVID-19 in their small hospitals.
Nahakul says "We are trying to reduce elective work, with many of our pregnant patients being able to follow up by mobile from home. They are asked to self quarantine. We have established a health desk at district entry point and all the people have to fill in their personal details and go through initial health check ups. “I had my job interview for Nick Simmons Institute 2 weeks ago and I got the job successfully! So I rejoined Kalikot District Hospital on 6th November, for a year long posting. I will also be participating in 10 weeks long Advance skilled Birth Attendants training in a tertiary care hospital - after which I will be qualified to perform caesarean sections on my own.
